ATHENS, GA – Bobby Saxon, Democratic nominee for the Georgia 10th Congressional District, calls on Congressman Paul Broun, Jr. to refund taxpayer money he wastefully spent on self promoting mailers."I am shocked and dismayed with today’s news that Congressman Broun would be so careless with taxpayer money. He has regularly voted against the interests of hardworking Georgia families; voting against critical programs for needy children, benefits for veterans, and against stronger law enforcement for child pornography, all the while spending our tax dollars promoting his name,” Saxon said.
“Today I call on Paul Broun, Jr. to refund the $562,000 of hard earned taxpayer money that he spent on shameless self promotion. Congressman Broun's hypocritical position on government spending illustrates the need for true positive change in the 10th District. ATHENS, GA - Bobby Saxon, Democratic nominee for the Georgia 10th Congressional District, today released a statement in response to Congressman Paul Broun, Jr.'s vote against The National Highway Bridge Reconstruction and Inspection Act. This bill was written in response to the catastrophic bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota that occurred one year ago today and killed thirteen people.
"I am disappointed that Congressman Broun continues to care more about his personal agenda than he does the citizens of the 10th District,” Bobby said. "Our highways are one of the most visible and important parts of our state and national infrastructure. Bridges are a key link in that infrastructure and we must ensure they are safe for travel. We must put a priority on the safety of our citizens and the proper maintenance of the roads that we all travel.
“Mr. Broun’s vote against the National Highway Bridge Reconstruction and Inspection Act potentially endangered the lives of our most precious resource, our citizens. Fortunately, responsible leadership prevailed and the bill passed on a bipartisan vote of 367-55. 87% of the Congressional delegation voted in favor of safety for their constituents as I would have had I been the Congressman for the 10th District.
“I urge Congressman Broun to thoroughly review spending bills before rejecting them outright. Fiscal responsibility requires a common sense approach that never trumps safety for our citizens. ATHENS, GA - Yesterday, TheHill.com broke the news that Congressman Paul Broun Jr.’s chief of staff has left in the face of mounting controversy surrounding Broun’s budget crisis. Bobby Saxon, candidate for Congress in the 10th District, voiced his concern about the resignation.
“This news is disturbing,” said Saxon. “We already knew that Congressman Broun’s office was in bad shape, but his chief of staff’s resignation shows that our district’s budget crisis won’t be going away anytime soon. Congressman Broun simply reached too deep into the taxpayer-funded cookie jar, and his constituents are going to pay the price. If Congressman Broun can no longer afford to pay his Washington staff, how can we expect him to serve the approximately 700,000 people that he represents?
“Congressman Broun preaches ‘fiscal responsibility,’ which has involved voting down crucial veteran and children’s programs. “In a time when Americans are suffering from $4 gas prices, a mortgage crisis, and the threat of collapsing banks, Georgians deserve a Congressman who will be fiscally responsible and will make the best use of taxpayer money,” said Bobby Saxon, Georgia’s 10th Congressional District Democratic nominee. “Congressman Broun’s inability to manage his Congressional office budget is an indication of his willingness to use taxpayer money for his personal gain. Georgians need a Congressman who will be responsible in the use of the privileges granted to him by the voters of this district.”
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “Since Jan. 1, Broun has boosted his name recognition with constituents through 10 mailings using his congressional "franking" privilege, spending nearly half his overall $1.38 million overall annual budget on communications alone, Roll Call reported.”
Saxon said, “I have repeatedly said that I do not believe Mr. Broun’s previous personal financial problems are a relevant issue in this election, however, this story does raise serious questions about his ability to properly manage taxpayer money. ATHENS, GA – It looks like some political pundits need help remembering that Georgia’s election season doesn’t end in July.
In a July 17 article of the Wall Street Journal called “Dr. Broun Goes Back to Washington,” columnist John Fund writes, “Dr. Broun will be going back to Washington next year, having won 71% in last night's primary.” There is no mention of Bobby Saxon or his November challenge against Congressman Broun.
“If Mr. Fund had done some research before he wrote this article, he’d have realized that I carried eight counties against both Representative Fleming AND Congressman Broun," said Saxon. "In five of those counties, I carried more votes than my two opponents put together. Last Tuesday, 18,000 Republicans showed they were disappointed enough by Congressman Broun’s performance to vote against their sitting incumbent. That’s not a small number, and definitely not one that the media should be ignoring in a democracy where every vote counts.
“Folks still have nearly four months to make up their minds on their own. We don’t need the Washington establishment and big-shot political pundits pressuring people on how to vote, and we definitely don’t need a Wall Street Journal writer already declaring our next Congressman before anyone has a say.
“I invite Mr. Fund to call me before he writes anymore articles about the 10th district of Georgia. We can discuss my desire to solve real problems in this district in a responsible and bipartisan way.”

Debates and Forums
The last two weeks gave us a great opportunity to showcase the difference between my candidacy and the ones of my opponents. Yes, we’re always fighting the snub from the mainstream media and the lack of fundraising dollars but we definitely have a surplus when it comes to debating. It’s easy when you’re on the right side of the issues.
Our first debate/forum was back on May 23rd in Greene County but we finished the primary season with a flash with five in a two week period. Barry and I were at all of them. Paul made it to three.
The two biggies in the bunch were the one sponsored by the Elberton Star in Elbert County and the AARP debate in Habersham County. All three of us were present for these two and the moderators did a good job of making sure we covered the most critical topics of this campaign.
One thing became apparent during these debates; even a country boy is smart enough to compete with a doctor and a lawyer if his heart is in the right place. I challenge the winner of their primary to debate me in every county in this district. The voters deserve an opportunity to see us in person and hear our views on working to solve real problems in this country.
This campaign is about getting rid of partisan politics in this country. I know it’s an uphill battle but I believe in my heart that it’s a battle worth fighting. Our country is too divided right now and the extreme left and extreme right are to blame. We have to find a way to work together to solve real problems in this country. We must reach across the aisle, look people in the eye, tell them the truth, and get along long enough to do the right thing for our country. I believe this…. I hope you do as well.

Command and General Staff College (CGSC)
It's been a couple weeks since I blogged but I have a great reason. I've been away for military training.
I just returned from Fort Dix, New Jersey. I was there for two weeks completing the final training classes that were required to prepare me for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel (LTC).
I've been a Major in the Georgia Army National Guard for just a tad over four years now. Each step of the promotion ladder requires additional training in addition to good Officer Evaluation Reports (OER's). The training to prepare me for promotion to LTC is called Intermediate Level Education (ILE) and is provided through the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC).
The training focused on the Strategic, Operational, and Tactical levels of war. The course was a six week course spread over the course of a year. It was divided into three parts; a two week course focusing on the Strategic level of war; eight weekends of training that focused on the Operational level of war; and the final two weeks focusing on the Tactical level of war.
I've been back in the National Guard for nearly seven years and this is the third school that I have attended in order to progress in my career. The other schools were the Field Artillery Officers Advanced Course (FAOAC) and the Combined Arms Services Staff School (CAS3). In addition to these schools I've also attended Air Assault School and completed the Military Police Transition Course in the last few years. Being a well educated officer is a must in today's military.
I know this training is valuable. I applied much of it when I commanded Service Battery, 1/214th FA (Toccoa, GA) on a Homeland Security mission and during my year in Baghdad as the Battle Major for the Third Infantry Division (3ID). I'm sure this most recent training will be extremely valuable as I move forward in leadership positions. Maybe even as your next Congressman.

Being a well educated officer is a must in today's military.
I know this training is valuable. I applied much of it when I commanded Service Battery, 1/214th FA (Toccoa, GA) on a Homeland Security mission and during my year in Baghdad as the Battle Major for the Third Infantry Division (3ID). I'm sure this most recent training will be extremely valuable as I move forward in leadership positions. Maybe even as your next Congressman.

Campaigning (Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend)
The day began with a quick trip to Atlanta for the DPG State Committee meeting. As a state committee member I was allowed to vote on the slate of delegates to the DNC meeting in Denver. I know many of the delegates and it was a pleasure to cast a vote for them. I know they'll do a great job.
After spending my morning in Atlanta, I headed back up to my district and straight to Banks County for the "Day at the Fort" celebration at the Fort Hollingsworth Fort in the Hollingsworth community near Alto, GA. It was a great event with lots of vintage dancing, music, and reenactments. I arrived at the fort not too long after the rain let up so I was happy I stayed dry.
I then traveled from Banks to Stephens County and the trip was u
neventful until I got into the town of Toccoa. I know Toccoa pretty well since I commanded Service Battery, 1/214th FA there back in 2003 - 2004. However, the 20th Annual Poke Sallit Festival was a little difficult to find but well worth the extra time. I had heard of Poke Sallit but had never eaten any until Saturday. Boy, have I been missing some good eatin'. Throw in a little fatback, which I love, and I was in hog heaven (pun intended). The good folks at the festival said I was the first Congressional candidate that had visited them in 20 years. Maybe, I'll be back next year as a Congressman.
I left Toccoa and headed right down Big A road to Lavonia and then to Hartwell, GA in Hart County. The Cars & Guitars, Under the Stars festival was in full swing by the time I got there. I'm a car buff and it was great to see so many autos on display representing many generations of great design. I met a lot of people at this festival and we had some wonderful conversations about the economy, immigration, and Iraq. The best booth I visited was the one for the Ferst Foundation. This great group got started down in Madison, GA and it's goal is to provide a new book a month to every child under five in the counties they serve. Please help this organization in your county.
My trip back to Nicholson was eventful because I decided to take a few roads I don't normally travel. I stumbled across a great Mud Boggin' hole in Madison County and not too far down the road I had to stop while a guy herded his goats down the side of the road. Both of these made me think of the saying "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God". I'm proud as heck to be both.

Saxon vs. Broun vs. Fleming
Wow, what a night!
Paul Broun, Barry Fleming, and I debated each other for 90 minutes just outside Greensboro (Greene County) last night at Reynolds Plantation. It was truly a great night for this campaign.
The format allowed each of us to give a 10 minute introductory comment and then we spent approximately an hour answering questions from the audience. We had a maximum of two minutes each to answer our questions. Kudo's to the kind residents at Reynolds for treating me fairly and for being so receptive to my views and my approach to this campaign. I truly believe we walked away with some support and especially with respect.
I did not consider any of the questions to be overly difficult. Most were about the economy and immigration. There were none of the tough questions that you would normally expect when you have two Republicans going against a Democrat with a mostly Republican crowd.
My campaign did video the entire debate. We're working on cutting it down to a few small videos from the hour and a half of raw footage. You'll see some great stuff from us over the next few days.
I can assure you of one thing. I'll be your next Congressman if they don't avoid debating me.
I hereby invite the winner of the Republican primary to debate me in every county in the district between July 15th and election day. What do you say boys? Are you game?

Thursday night on Big A Road - Toccoa GA
I last passed through Toccoa a few weeks back when my son, Will, and I were heading to Lake Burton for a camping/fishing trip. We stopped in one of the big grocery stores on our way up to "stock up" with the good stuff two men need when they go camping. You know, pop tarts, Oreo’s, eggs, bacon, and milk. We know how to do it right.
Yesterday I was in Toccoa for the monthly meeting of the Stephens County Democrats. They had a very nice gathering at the Quincy's on Big A road. Who can complain about good political discussion combined with something as southern as the Quincy's buffet?
All the local democratic candidates were in attendance and each had an opportunity to speak. It looks like the team is working hard to field good sensible candidates in Stephens.
I spoke for about 15 minutes and then fielded a few questions. The same topics always come up; the Economy, Iraq, and Healthcare. People are hurting in this country and they want responsible leadership that will work to solve real problems. They're tired of partisan rhetoric. I spoke honestly and responsibly about solving problems. I know we have a lot of work ahead of us. We just have to begin the job immediately. I'm ready!

A in English and A+ in Partisan Politics

ATHENS - Representative Paul Broun, Jr. is trumpeting his "A in English" award from a special-interest group, but a closer look at his short legislative career shows that the congressman earned a failing grade in most other areas.Democratic candidate Bobby Saxon has released a few more grades for Congressman Broun.
Mathematics - F: Congressman Broun, Jr. clearly needs some remedial work in the subject of math, especially statistics. Two months ago, Broun said that, "roughly 40 percent of the people that are intercepted crossing our border are not Mexicans." In fact, according to the Washington Post, "less than 7 percent are 'Other than Mexicans' (OTM). The 'Aliens from Special Interest Countries' (ASIC) -- most anywhere in the Middle East and a chunk of South Asia -- totaled 297. That's three-hundredths of 1 percent." ("OMG, DHS! ASICs and OTMs!" by Al Kamen, Washington Post, March 12, 2008)
Child Care - F: When it comes to protecting children, Congressman Broun could stand a refresher course – fast. Congressman Broun, Jr. was one of only two to vote against the SAFE Act, a bill that will help law enforcement catch and prosecute those who distribute child pornography over open wireless computer networks. Economics - F: Congressman Broun, Jr. showed that, like Republican Presidential nominee John McCain, he just doesn't know much about economics. Broun was one of four Georgia Republicans to vote against reauthorizing the Small Business and Innovation Research program, which helps new businesses bring innovative new ideas to market. Perhaps Paul Broun doesn't understand that independent businesses are the backbone of our economy. Perhaps he doesn't care. Either way, a refresher course in capitalism and market economies is in order here. (Congress.org)
Partisan Politics as usual - A+: There is one thing that Paul Broun, Jr. has done well - become a consummate Beltway insider. Despite running as an “maverick" Republican, who was going to stand up to the GOP establishment, Broun has proven himself willing to cozy up to the same establishment he ran against. He was recently supported in glowing terms by all of Georgia's Republican representatives. So, kudos to Congressman Paul Broun, Jr. for getting one subject right. Congressman Paul Broun, Jr. has continued to vote the party line more than 89% of the time even when congress has an approval rating of 22% (Fox News). Does he really have our district’s best interests at heart?
Bobby Saxon is an Iraq War combat veteran and small business owner from Nicholson, Georgia. He is a Major in the Georgia Army National Guard and has served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Pentagon. Bobby attends Bethany United Methodist Church, is a member of the American Legion Post 56 in Jefferson, GA and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2872 in Athens, GA.

Our Congressman's April Fools Prescription
On April 1st our representative in Congress gave America what he called a “prescription” for dealing with our nation’s energy problems. Some of his remedies are well-intended, such as his call for tax relief for Georgia motorists and his emphasis on alternative fuel production. However, he must understand that making a vague diagnosis based on complex and serious symptoms will not make America healthier.
Once again, our representative in Washington has failed to realize that real problems are solved by action, not cheesy rhetoric. Instead of complaining about an unpopular policy proposal, he should consider actually voting for legislation that solves today’s problems. He should have voted for The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, an initiative that passed with nearly 76% bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Bush on December 19, 2007. This law raises fuel economy standards by 40% and mandates a five fold increase in the use of bio-fuels.
Mr. Broun may feel that blaming the Democrats for $3.25 gas is the way to get re-elected. However, I believe the good people of the 10th district won’t fall for his April Fools political rant. I believe they’re as tired of political extremists as I am and they’re ready for bi-partisan representation like I offer.
Like the good doctor, I have an oath to uphold as well: to abide by the principles of Duty, Honor, and Country, and that’s what I intend to do when I’m a Congressman.
Now’s the time!

Nascar Week 7
For the second time in seven weeks I've managed to climb to the top of the National Guard Fantasy Racing League. YES!
I'm a big fan of Nascar and watch or listen to nearly every race. The only sport that I love more is GEORGIA BULLDOG FOOTBALL. Of course, I love my DAWGS but for 36 Sundays a year (Sometimes a Saturday instead) I can't wait for "Gentleman, Start your engines!".
I got involved in this league in 2004 but didn't get to be a player. I had to wait until 2005 to enter my first team. That year wasn't so good for my team. It had a lot to do with the fact I spent the whole year in Baghdad with the 3rd Infantry Division.
Last year I finished 6th in a league of 50 players. I had a late season surge to overcome a horrendous start. I was around 45th after Busch and Stewart wrecked each other in the final laps of the Daytona 500.
This year has been a great year for me so far. I began the season with a strong finish in Daytona (2nd) and haven't dropped below 3rd for the season. This week I moved into 1st for the second time thanks to a great pick with Carl Edwards. I was the only player in the top ten to pick him as my "A" driver.
Overall it was a good weekend for Saxon Racing. My son, Will, brother Mark, and nephew, Mason all moved up positions with strong finishes in Texas.
In case you're wondering. I'm a Hendrick Motorsports follower. Go National Guard and Go Junior!
